While there is nothing you can do with your landscape to make your property completely fireproof, we can give you a few tips for helping prevent a fire from spreading as rapidly across your property. A few minutes can be the difference between life and death, so everything you do will count.

  • Remove fuel ladders – What does that mean? Don’t plant trees right by your home that can quickly transfer fire from the ground to the roof of your home. Fire can spread from the ground to a tree canopy in moments. Keeping certain types of trees away from the house can give you those few extra moments you need.
  • Have a defensible space – A defensible space creates a buffer between your home or business and an approaching wildfire by reducing what can quickly cause the fire to spread in certain areas around structures. This involves removing any dead plants or trees (which will burn faster), clearing out gutters, pruning nearby shrubs, and getting rid of anything under your porch that could catch fire easily.
  • Maintain the landscape – Good maintenance helps too. The healthier your landscape is, the slower the fire will spread. Again, a healthy tree will still burn, but if you can slow the fire down even a little, it may save a life.

Stay Safe California

While West Coast Trees is primarily a palm tree sales and contract growing company, we care about our community and want you to stay safe. That’s why we offer tips like these from time to time. Tips for Increasing the Value of Commercial Land Investments https://www.wctrees.com/tips-for-increasing-the-value-of-commercial-land-investments/ Tue, 12 Feb 2019 18:50:32 +0000 http://www.wctrees.com/?p=9112 If you are a land investor, you want to increase the value of your investment over time. Here are a few tips for making your commercial properties worth more.

  • Help the property drain properly – Some pieces of land drain properly on their own, but if you notice water pooling during the rainy season, you may need to do some site work. You can get the land to drain properly and use this to the advantage of landscaping by having water drain toward trees and other plants that require more water.
  • Enhance nutrients in the soil – There are many ways that you can prepare the soil organically so that trees and other plants will grow faster and larger. Don’t use chemical fertilizers because polluting local water sources can negatively affect your land value (and it’s just nice for the planet to avoid using chemicals).
  • Keep land well-manicured – Preparing some landscaping in advance can make the land appear more appealing to potential buyers. Of course, you don’t want to go crazy and plant so many trees that the buyer may have to move them in order to build. However, some aesthetically pleasing trees like the California Fan Palm can add a nice touch and help you fetch a higher selling price.

Improve Your Property’s Long-Term Value with These Tips https://www.wctrees.com/improve-your-propertys-long-term-value-with-these-tips/ Tue, 29 Jan 2019 18:33:22 +0000 http://www.wctrees.com/?p=9082 When you invest in a home, you either intend to live there for the rest of your life (in which case, you want it to be comfortable), or you intend on selling it later in life (in which case, you want to maintain and increase its value). We’re going to take a look at how you can use your landscaping to accomplish either of these goals.

Have an Outdoor Kitchen Installed

An outdoor kitchen, along with an eating and lounging area, ensures that you will use and enjoy your outdoor space. It is also a great boost for resale value of a home. Built-in grills and other outdoor appliances mean you are always ready to enjoy the yard with family and friends.

Design a Sustainable Landscape

Sustainable landscapes do more than just conserve resources. They are also easier to maintain long-term and so instead of just looking good for a couple of years, they have long-term appeal and value. One key element of a sustainable landscape is using the right species that will withstand local weather conditions. In the southwest US, that usually means desert shrubs and grasses as well as native trees like the California Fan Palm.

Maintaining Trees and Shrubs

You need to prune and trim these plants properly. Otherwise, you run the risk of one day waking up and realizing everything has been overgrown for a long time. It’s much easier to keep a landscape under control than to regain control once it has grown wild.

West Coast Trees is proud to be the number one seller of the California Fan Palm, and we offer many other native tree and shrub species. We also offer contract growing services and landscape design services to help you meet all of your landscaping needs. Why Sustainable Commercial Landscaping Is a Must https://www.wctrees.com/why-sustainable-commercial-landscaping-is-a-must/ Tue, 15 Jan 2019 19:41:05 +0000 http://www.wctrees.com/?p=9041 Whether you operate a shopping mall, a hotel, a condo complex, or a restaurant, your landscaping matters. But why does it make a difference whether or not you use sustainable practices? Here are two major reasons to think about the environment when planning your commercial landscape.

Sustainability Improves Brand Perception

Many consumers in the modern world are concerned about climate change. Simply being able to associate your business with the word sustainability may give you a competitive edge over other businesses in your area. Plus, a sustainable landscape really is good for the environment, so you can meet your brand’s goals for being eco-friendly.

Sustainable Landscaping Is Easier to Maintain

Sustainable landscaping is also good for your overhead. By using native plant species that are already adapted to the climate, you save on maintenance costs and ensure that your landscape will continue to look good for years to come with minimal maintenance.

Your Source for Sustainable Commercial Landscaping

At West Coast Trees, we know how to design and maintain a suitable commercial landscape. From being the number one retailer of California’s only native palm tree variety (the California Fan Palm) to offering contract grow services, we do it all.

  • Plant – The planting process plays a vital role in how well your new landscape will perform.
  • Grow – Meet the full potential of your landscape by planting adolescent trees and shrubs and growing them to maturity onsite.
  • Maintain – Maintenance is what separates a landscape that looks good when it is planted versus one that looks good five years from now (without the massive expensive or redoing the landscape every year or two).

Winter Landscaping Tips to Protect Your Plants https://www.wctrees.com/winter-landscaping-tips-to-protect-your-plants/ Thu, 03 Jan 2019 18:33:39 +0000 http://www.wctrees.com/?p=9017 In places like California, the hot and dry summer is actually the most difficult season for plants to survive. However, if you use native trees and shrubs such as the California Fan Palm, then your landscape should be able to survive the harsh weather.

Winter may be a different story. Though mild, a California winter could still affect your landscape, so here are a few tips to help your plants make it through.

  • Don’t fertilize – The time to stimulate growth for your plants is in the spring, not winter. Fertilizing at this time of year may actually be detrimental for certain species.
  • Don’t prune – You may see some brown fronds that you want to remove, but never prune your plants outside of the growing season. Any kind of rough handling is going to hurt a plant in winter.
  • Water as needed – We think about water in the dry summers, but winter can be dry too. It may be cooler, but that doesn’t mean your plants are properly watered. Native plants may be attuned to the drier weather, so be sure not to overwater.

Sustainable Landscaping Tips for Your Home or Business https://www.wctrees.com/sustainable-landscaping-tips-for-your-home-or-business/ Tue, 18 Dec 2018 18:50:29 +0000 http://www.wctrees.com/?p=8984 A beautiful landscape can be pleasing to both the property owner as well as guests and passersby. However, a sustainable landscape has several benefits. For one thing, it is better for the planet in general. Second, it is easier to maintain, so your landscape will continue to be appealing as the months and years pass. Here are a few tips for creating a sustainable landscape at your home or business.

  • Plant native plants – Native plant species will already be well-adapted to the area where you are trying to grow them. That means they shouldn’t need a lot of extra watering or nutrients added to the soil.
  • Use organic growing products – Avoid chemical fertilizers that can runoff into the water supply and affect drinking water as well as the environment in general.
  • Keep the lighting solar powered – Use solar-powered LED lights so that your landscape is safe and beautiful at night but isn’t drawing additional energy from fossil fuels.

By applying these few tips, you can keep your landscaping looking its best while leaving a minimal footprint.

3 Ways Desert Plants Survive Droughts https://www.wctrees.com/3-ways-desert-plants-survive-droughts/ Tue, 04 Dec 2018 18:09:33 +0000 http://www.wctrees.com/?p=8943 You may have noticed that on our blog we frequently recommend the use of native desert plants in the arid southwest US. But how do these hearty plants survive drought conditions? Here are three things that desert trees, shrubs, and grasses do to survive.

  • Collecting Water – Desert plant usually have shallow roots. There’s no water down deep anyway, so they grab as much as they can near the surface during the occasional rain. Some plants are even arranged in patterns that allow them to collect water as it is falling. After the storm is over, water continues to be absorbed through the leaves.
  • Storing Water – Once water is collected, the plant can’t use it all up at once. While most plants dry out in the heat, desert plants maintain their interior moisture. That is why people are sometimes able to survive in the desert for a time by cutting open plants and harvesting the water inside.
  • Conserving Water – Desert plants also go through a process that is, in effect, like the way some animals hibernate when food supplies are low. During the dry season, the plants feed gradually off their conserved water supplies. During a rainy season, they will bloom and make use of the excess water that is available (as well as refilling their supplies for the dry season).

But why should your company be thinking about sustainable landscaping? Here are two important reasons.

  • Environmentally-friendly landscaping is good for brand perception – Anything you can label as sustainable or environmentally-friendly is going to look good on your advertising in modern times where people are really concerned about climate change. More and more consumers are looking for buzzwords like “green” or eco-conscious”.
  • It is easier to maintain an eco-friendly landscape – Sustainable landscapes are not just good for the environment. They are also what is best for your brand because they are easier to maintain. For example, in the southwest US, where hot and dry conditions are common, using desert shrubs and grasses or local trees like the California Fan Palm is a great way to keep everything looking good without needing to waste a ton of water.

Dos and Don’ts for Dry Climate Landscaping https://www.wctrees.com/dos-and-donts-for-dry-climate-landscaping/ Tue, 06 Nov 2018 18:00:41 +0000 http://www.wctrees.com/?p=8898 If you live in the southwest US, you face some unique challenges to having a well-manicured yard. Here are a few dos and don’ts to help you have an attractive landscape, even under drought conditions.

  • Don’t plant trees that need a lot of water. There are plenty of desert shrubs and grasses that can handle drought conditions. There is also the ornamental California Fan Palm that both looks beautiful and is native to the US West Coast, so it is well equipped for the dryer weather.
  • Do plan your landscaping based on the water needs of your plants. If there are some plants that require more water than others, keep them all together and plant them in the part of your yard that collects the most water when it rains.
  • Don’t have the entire yard be stone. While you can’t have a yard of grass that requires water, you also don’t want 100% stones. They heat up in the sun and can make it difficult to enjoy sitting Shade trees and grasses that can handle hot, dry weather are a great way to add cool spots to your landscape for people to gather.

Do call West Coast Trees. Not only are we the world’s number one supplier of California Fan Palm trees, but we also offer landscape services, contract growing, and many organically grown trees, shrubs, and grasses. Harvesting Rainwater for Your California Fan Palm Trees https://www.wctrees.com/harvesting-rainwater-for-your-california-fan-palm-trees/ Tue, 23 Oct 2018 17:00:55 +0000 http://www.wctrees.com/?p=8861 The California Fan Palm, or Washingtonia filifera, is a hearty tree that is native to California. In other words, you are not going to need to water it often because it is used to the arid conditions in the southwestern part of the US. However, if you experience a particularly hot and dry summer or if you have other trees and shrubs that need more water, harvesting rainwater can help. Here are a few tips.

  • Collect water using the gutters that you already have in place. You likely have downspouts to control where the water runs off. Use these to send water directly into your harvesting collectors.
  • Use empty garbage cans or buckets to capture the water. This keeps you from needing to spend a bunch of money on collection since you may already have some extras laying around.
  • You will need sealable containers for storage. Otherwise, you will just be breeding mosquitos and other insects. The stored water needs to be filtered either before or after the storage process.
  • You will also need a hose and a pump to use the water you have filtered and stored. Now you have water when your landscaping needs it most.
